Frequently asked questions
What is XIRR?
An annualized, money-weighted return for cash flows at irregular dates. In the example, $20,000 invested over three years is now $26,000 — a 30% total gain, or 12.15% a year.
XIRR vs. a fund’s published return?
A fund reports a time-weighted return that ignores when you added money. XIRR reflects your own timing, so it can be higher or lower than the fund’s figure.
Can I include withdrawals?
Add anything you took out to today’s value. The result is then an approximation; withdrawals early on would raise the true XIRR slightly.
