Frequently asked questions

What is XIRR?

The yearly return on money invested at different dates. In the example, ₹2,00,000 put in over three years is worth ₹2,60,000 today: a plain gain of 30%, but an XIRR of 12.15% a year.

Why is XIRR different from the plain gain?

The plain gain treats all money as if it was invested on day one. Money added later had less time to grow, so XIRR gives it less weight.

How is XIRR different from CAGR?

CAGR works for one amount invested once. XIRR works when you invest several times, like a SIP with top-ups.

Is a good XIRR better than an FD?

Compare XIRR with the FD rate after tax, and remember that market returns go up and down from year to year.
