Frequently asked questions
How is the price of gold jewellery worked out?
Gold value (weight × today’s rate × purity) + making charges, and then 3% GST on both. For 10 grams of 22K at ₹12,000 a gram for 24K and 12% making charges: ₹1,09,920 of gold, ₹13,190 making charges and ₹3,693 GST — ₹1,26,804 in all.
What is wastage (tarugu or VA)?
Many jewellers, mostly in South India, add a share of the weight as “wastage”, “tarugu” or “value addition”, charged at the gold rate, often on top of making charges. In the example, 8% wastage adds ₹8,794 and GST on it. Ask for wastage and making charges in writing, and compare jewellers on the full bill.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?
24K is almost pure gold (99.9%). Jewellery is usually 22K (91.6% gold) or 18K (75% gold) because pure gold is too soft. Always check the BIS hallmark on the jewellery.
How much GST is charged on gold?
3% on the full bill — gold value plus making charges.
Is jewellery a good way to save in gold?
For saving, coins or bars with low making charges keep more of your money in gold. With 12% making charges you pay ₹16,884 that you will not get back when you sell; a 24K coin with 3% charges costs ₹7,301 in charges and GST for the same weight.
How much will I get if I sell my jewellery?
Jewellers buy back at the gold value only, often less a small deduction. For this jewellery, the gold value today is ₹1,09,920; making charges and GST are not returned.
