Frequently asked questions

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the price by the GST rate and add it. ₹10,000 at 18%: GST is ₹1,800, so the price with GST is ₹11,800.

How do I take GST out of a price that includes it?

Divide by (1 + rate). ₹11,800 including 18% GST ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before GST; the GST part is ₹1,800. Do not simply take 18% off the total — that takes out too much.

What are the GST rates now?

From 22 September 2025 there are two main rates: 5% (daily needs, many foods, medicines) and 18% (most goods and services). A special 40% rate applies to luxury and sin goods, and gold, silver and jewellery are at 3%. The old 12% and 28% slabs were removed.

What are CGST, SGST and IGST?

When buyer and seller are in the same state, GST is split equally: half is CGST (to the Centre) and half SGST (to the state) — ₹900 each in the example. When they are in different states, the whole ₹1,800 is IGST.

Sources and method

The tax is the price times the rate in the notification: either added to a price before tax, or taken out of a price that already includes it.
